Why become a Candidate for Designation?

  • The appraisal industry has become increasingly competitive in recent years, and joining the Appraisal Institute demonstrates that you are a well-credentialed and highly qualified valuation professional who is serious about your career.

Who can become a Candidate for Designation?

  • Those who are state certified appraisers (or equivalent) with an interest in pursuing the prestigious AI MAI, SRA, AI-GRS, and AI-RRS Designations.
  • Individuals who hold credentials from other organizations such as, Appraisal Institute of Canada, HypZert GmbH (Germany), CCIM Institute, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism (Japan), International Association of Assessing Officers, National Association of Independent Fee Appraisers, American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers and American Society of Appraisers.
  • Graduate students pursuing an MSRE, MRED, or an MBA with a concentration in real estate valuation in an approved AI Master’s Degree Program.

Note: Readmission Requirements for former Candidates for Designation An individual whose candidacy has been terminated fewer than three (3) times may apply for readmission to candidacy after at least one (1) year from the date of the most recent termination. An individual may be a Candidate a maximum of three times per path.  Any Candidate who is eligible for readmission at future date must have completed Standards and Ethics education requirements within 4 years prior to the date of application for readmission.

What are the MAI, SRA, AI-GRS, and and AI-RRS Designations?

  • MAI Designated members are experienced in the valuation of commercial, industrial, residential, and other types of properties, and advise clients on real estate investment decisions. Students enrolled in the Appraisal Institute Master’s Degree Program may work toward their MAI designation while pursuing their advanced degrees.
  • SRA Designated members are experienced in the valuation of residential real property.
  • AI-GRS Designated members are experienced in issues related to due diligence and risk management often requested by their employers and clients.
  • AI-RRS Designated members are experienced in issues related to due diligence and risk management often requested by their employers and clients.

Note: As a Candidate for Designation, you must meet Annual Minimum Progress every year.

What are the annual fees for Candidacy?

Candidate program fees are $450 per year, and are prorated for those joining between February and November. Anyone joining after November will be charged the full fees for the upcoming year. Fees are subject to change annually.
