Option: Traditional Demo

Which option did you choose (Traditional Demo, E-demo, Defense of Reports, Capstone Program) and why?

I chose the Traditional Demo, but I went through the application process for the beta E-demo path. The reason I wanted to be part of the E-demo was I wanted to be motivated by the deadlines associated with completing the demo in sections to turn into an advisor.

How did the Appraisal Institute help you on your journey to designated membership?

As part of the selection process for the beta E-demo group, I was required to complete the online General Demonstration Report Writing seminar, which was very insightful. I have always valued the AI coursework/seminars, and the online seminar was no exception. The expectations laid out in the webinar were very clear, and the instructor did a great job providing examples of problem areas they have seen, along with providing suggestions in property selection and dealing with anticipated obstacles in the research/writing process.

Furthermore, the AI coursework and publications provided all the data needed to prepare for the Comprehensive Exam.

What was the biggest obstacle you faced during the process and how did you overcome it?

The biggest obstacle I faced was simply getting started by choosing a subject property for my Traditional Demo option. I overcame this obstacle by applying for the beta E-demo test group. I was very thankful for the E-demo selection process as it motivated me to choose a property and begin the appraisal process. Part of the selection process included providing a detailed account of research and analysis completed to date at the time of application.

What surprised you the most about the membership process?

I really was not surprised by the membership process. It was very clear to me what I needed to do to fulfill the membership requirements.

What is the biggest benefit of becoming designated?

I work primarily in litigation, and the MAI designation is a beneficial credential for expert testimony. However, the most distinctive benefit is the value of the education/knowledge gained throughout the designation process.

What advice do you have for Associate members working towards designated membership?

Use the class lists that are provided in AI courses. The sense of camaraderie I experienced and friendships I developed throughout the designation process provided a supportive network to rely on while completing the designation requirements.

If you had to do it all over again, what would you do different, knowing what you know now?

I would not have waited to start my Traditional Demo. I felt a sense of dread when I thought of this obstacle. However, I never anticipated that I would view it as a positive experience when completed. It was a learning experience that surpassed all of the other education I have completed.
