1. When I log in and select my class, I am taken to the Online Education homepage.
This sometimes happens if your privacy settings are set too high in your web browser. In Internet Explorer go to "Tools" then "Internet Options" then the Privacy tab. Move the setting down one or two notches, save the setting and then try logging in again.

If you are still having trouble, click here.

2. Why am I taken to the Online Education homepage in the middle of working on a class?
This will happen if your computer has been inactive for more than thirty (30) minutes due to a security feature of our system designed to prevent unauthorized access of your class.

To return to the your place in the class, simply log back in to the system and continue where you left off.

3. I am done with the class, but did not receive a completion certificate.
The certificate of completion will be sent to you via email as soon as you complete the seminar evaluation. In order to receive your certificate, please do the following:

1. Log into class
2. Go to the Conclusion module
3. Go to the last page of this module
4. Click the "Done" button
5. Fill out the evaluation
6. Check your email. If the certificate does not arrive within 1 hour, please contact us.

4. I completed the evaluation, but still did not receive my completion certificate.
If you completed the seminar evaluation, and did not receive an email from the Appraisal Institute with your completion certificate, please check to make sure your anti-spam blocking software allows emails from the Appraisal Institute. For most anti-spam programs adding ai@appraisalinstitute.org to the address book will allow this e-mail thought. If not it should be configured to allow any email addresses that end in @appraisalinstitute.org.

5. Why can't I access any of the Modules?
This happens because the modules must be completed in sequence. Please select the module with red arrow next to it. You should have access to the first page in the module. If you click on this page there will be navigation buttons at the bottom to advance you through the seminar. The modules must be completed in sequence to maximize your learning.

6. How can I print the class materials?
You may print the class materials only after you complete the class by taking the following steps:
1. Log into the class
2. Select the last module in the class: Conclusion
3. Select the last page in this module: Conclusion
4. Click the "Print Seminar" button at the bottom of the page.
5. Select the button labeled "Print Complete Seminar"
6. This will open a new window in your internet browser displaying all text from the class.
7. Click the Print button on your browser (or if using Internet Explorer, choose File > Print).
8. All pages should print to your printer.

Have you done these steps, and received an error message? Users of the "Safari" internet browser have reported problems when trying to print the class materials. Please contact us if this is happening to you.

7. I'm having trouble taking a quiz.
To access a quiz, please ensure your computer allows pop-ups:

1. Please make sure you are using Internet Explorer 5.5 or above. You can find out for sure what version you are using by clicking on Help > About Internet Explorer. If you would like to upgrade to the current version of Internet Explorer, click here.

2. If you have installed any third-party software to block popup windows (including the Google toolbar), you must disable popup software for all appraisalinstitute.org webpages. View instructions.

3. Adjust your cookie settings in Internet Explorer by clicking Tools > Internet Options. At the top of the window, select the Privacy tab. You should see a slider that you can move to multiple positions. The slider should be on the "Medium-High" setting or lower. If it is set to "High" or "Block All Cookies", the quiz questions will not work.

4. Ensure your security settings in Internet Explorer are OK. Again, click Tools > Internet Options. At the top of the window, select the Security tab. Note the slider on this window. It should be set to "Medium" or lower. If it is set to "High", the quiz questions will not work.

5. Try disabling Microsofts VM settings in Internet Explorer. Again, click Tools > Internet Options. At the top of the window, select the Advanced tab. Scroll down until you see the "Microsoft VM" group. Uncheck the three boxes under this area if they are checked.

6. Check to see that you have a recent version of Java installed on your computer. Go to www.java.com and click the "Verify Installation" button. If you have below Version 1.5, you can follow the directions and upgrade. After you have upgraded, you may have to re-start your computer and then login to Online Education again and try to take the quiz..

If you continue to have trouble, and are accessing the class on a dial-up internet connection, try using a different browser or a different computer, preferably one that is connected via broadband access such as DSL or Cable modem.

8. Why am I required to get 80% of the quiz questions correct?
We realize this may seem excessive, but unfortunately, in order to receive approval for our online programs in the majority of the States, we designed it this way:

The learning objectives in each module must be mastered to continue to the next module. A quiz at the end of the module will assess your mastery of the learning objectives. You have three opportunities to master the objectives. After three opportunities, you will be directed to the online instructor for further assistance.

If you fail one objective (you miss all three questions), you will be unable to proceed to the next module until you contact the instructor and work through your problem until you understand it. Once the instructor is satisfied, they will allow you to proceed.

If this happens a lot through the seminar, that is fine. You will not "Fail" the seminar if this is the case. For your information, no one has failed more than two quizzes in any one seminar, so the odds of this happening to you are quite small.

11. How can I disable my popup blocking software?
Pop-ups are windows that appear automatically and without your permission. They often display advertising that can interfere with your ability to see the content on the page you're trying to read.

A pop-up blocker works with your Internet browser to prevent pop-up windows from automatically opening when you visit a web site. Unfortunately, blocking all pop-ups may prevent important features in our online classes from working. We recommend that you turn off any pop-up blockers while using our online education programs.

You can turn on and off most pop-up blockers at any time. You can also add onlineed.appraisalinstitute.org to an "allow list". This will allow pop-ups for Appraisal Institute sites, while blocking pop-ups for all other sites.

For more information, please visit our Instructions for Disabling Common Pop-up Software page.

12. The pages aren't linked / Why can't I click on any pages in Module 1?
You need to proceed linearly in the seminar. You probably haven't completed the pages in the Introduction module yet, which must be completed before going through Module 1. Go back to the Introduction module and complete those pages, then when you get to Module 1 the first page should be active. You may have to refresh the page to see the active link.

Webinars Wanted

We are now accepting proposals for webinars to be presented during 2008. What is a webinar? It is 1-2 hour live educational presentation over the Internet. The presenter and listeners can be anywhere in the world. Here is a short example. Webinars are a great way to share your knowledge and expertise with the appraisal profession.

If you have an idea that you think would be of interest to other appraisers, please submit a proposal.
