Instructor Materials

  Exam Questions
A pool of test questions and answers has been developed to help instructors prepare examinations based on the material in the student handbook.

  PowerPoint Presentation
In response to requests from instructors, the Appraisal Institute has also developed a complete PowerPoint presentation to accompany the handbook and help you make the most of this learning tool in the classroom.

Instructor materials are free and will be sent once we verify your teaching credentials. To request a downloadable copy of the exam questions and PowerPoint presentation, please contact us at TStudentHandbook@appraisalinstitute.org.

  Course Outline
This timed outline is one example of how a 60-hour course curriculum could be organized using The Appraisal of Real Estate, 12th edition, and The Student Handbook to The Appraisal of Real Estate. The following schedule has been segregated into 3½-hour sessions with 50 minutes of class work per hour (totaling roughly 175 minutes per session). Note that break time is not included in the total time allotted.

This schedule will not fit the needs of all instructors or every state’s licensing regulations, so it should be used as a starting point for developing a syllabus. The estimated time allotted to each subject can be adjusted to suit the level of emphasis desired by the instructor. For example, in a pre-licensing curriculum the advanced income capitalization chapters (23 and 24) can be eliminated, leaving room for discussion of new topics or additional review of existing topics.

Examination time is included in the total time allotted but is not added to any specific session. For example, a 120-minute examination could be incorporated easily into the last day of class, or one 60-minute exam could be scheduled for the midpoint of the class and another 60-minute exam for the final day.

  New Graphics Now Available
In response to requests from instructors using the student handbook in a classroom setting, all numbered figures, tables, worksheets, and exhibits in the handbook have been made available for download. The images in these PDF files reproduce the illustrations as they appear in the handbook and can be used by instructors as transparencies or as slides in PowerPoint presentations.

  Student Handbook Graphics
The tables in these Microsoft Word documents can be used by instructors to develop hands-on demonstrations of analytical and adjustment techniques for classroom presentations.

For example, an instructor could copy the data from one of the adjustment grids in the student handbook into a spreadsheet or statistical analysis program and develop formulas for the necessary calculations. Then, in the classroom the instructor could discuss the individual calculations with the students, showing how changes in one adjustment would affect the overall value indication.

As another example, the data from one of the reconstructed operating statements in the student handbook could be copied into a spreadsheet program. By revising forecast income and expense levels on the electronic spreadsheet, the instructor can illustrate how specific changes affect the discounted cash flow analysis and the indication of value.
