The Burt L. Thornton President’s Award is given at the President’s discretion to a person(s) who is: committed to the organization, currently engaged in its activities, an effective spokesperson, representative at all times, and in touch with both the needs of other AI professionals and the changes that the organization must help its AI professionals to meet.
The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to an AI professional who best demonstrates high ethical standards; contributed to the Appraisal Institute at the chapter, regional, national and/or international level(s); provided service to his or her community; and contributed to the appraisal profession. A minimum of 20 years of service is recommended to be eligible for this award.
The Outstanding Service Award is presented to an AI professional who has contributed ideas, service hours and dedication to ensure a specific program or effort is implemented at either the chapter, region, national and/or international level(s). This AI professional must be instrumental to the success of the program or effort, which also must be far enough along to measure and provide proof of success. Additionally, the program or effort must be beneficial to chapters, regions, national, international, designated members, candidates, affiliates, practicing affiliates and/or the profession.

2017 Burt L. Thornton President’s Award Winners
J. Roger Ball, Jr., MAI, SR/WA
Ball serves on the Appraisal Institute’s Education Committee and is an alumni of the Leadership Development & Advisory Council. He serves as the 2018 President of the Alabama Chapter, was Vice President in 2017, and has served on several committees at the national and chapter levels since earning his MAI in 2012. In addition, he is the Vice President of the International Center for Valuation Certification Board.
Chris Johnson, MAI, SRA

Johnson served on the North Carolina Chapter board of directors as treasurer in 2017, as well as Finance Committee chair, secretary in 2016 and Candidate Guidance Committee chair from 2014-16. He is an alumni of the Leadership Development & Advisory Council conference, and was a member of the national Demonstration Appraisal Grading Panel, a Candidate for Designation advisor and a member of Region V’s Chapter Services Committee.
César Servando Cantú Martinez, MAI, SRA, AI-GRS
Cantú Martinez serves on the Appraisal Institute Board of Directors as its international Board member, on the Demonstration Appraisal Grading Panel, International Relations Committee and International Community Engagement Project Team. He is a Leadership Development & Advisory Council conference alumni, and a former member of the University Relations Panel. He also in 2017 arranged meetings with potential partners in Panama, which AI hopes will open up the Latin America markets for its educational offerings, membership pathways and additional business opportunities for its professionals.
Pledger "Jody" Bishop, MAI, SRA

Bishop serves on the Appraisal Institute Board of Directors and as chair of Region IX. He is a Leadership Development & Advisory Council conference alumni, with an AI service record dating back, uninterrupted, to 1999. He is a former South Carolina Chapter officer serving in all capacities, including chapter president, and serving at the regional and national levels for several years.
2017 Lifetime Achievement Award Winners
William "Ted" Anglyn, MAI

Anglyn served on the Appraisal Institute’s national Board of Directors from 2000-02, and on various national committees and subcommittees, including the Finance Committee, Nominating Committee, Seminars Subcommittee and Continuing Professional Development Subcommittee. He was president of the Atlanta Area Chapter in 1999, vice president in 1998, secretary in 1997 and treasurer, Finance Committee chair and Education Committee chair in 1996. He alsohas been actively involved in the Appraisal Institute’s Leadership Development and Advisory Council conference, where an annual award is given in his honor.
Don Boucher, SRA

Boucher has served on the Appraisal Institute’s national Admissions and Designation Qualifications Committee since 2016, and on the national Government Relations Committee from 2010-16 (vice chair in 2015) and on other committees and subcommittees. He is regional representative for the Washington DC Metropolitan Area Chapter, a position he also held from 2012-15. He further served that chapter as Government Relations Committee chair from 2012-16, president in 2012, vice president in 2011, treasurer and Finance Committee Chair in 2010, secretary in 2009 and in various other committee roles.

Woody Fincham, SRA, AI-RRS

Fincham serves on the national Diversity Panel, Professional Standards and Guidance Committee and Editorial Board of The Appraisal Journal. Additionally, he was a discussion leader for the national Leadership Development Advisory Council conference, an education instructor and served on the national Admissions and Designation Qualifications Committee from 2015-16. He is Education Committee Chair for the Virginia Commonwealth Chapter, and previously held various committee roles with the Hampton Roads Chapter.
