HR Manager – Non-Profit/Professional Association

The Appraisal Institute is seeking a solutions-oriented, analytical human resources professional and people influencer to manage our human resource function. Reporting to senior management, you’ll provide the full range of human resource services to our organization including managing all aspects of employee benefits and compliance, partnering with Finance, managing employee relations, coordinating recruitment services and overseeing employee training program delivery.

  • Administer health and benefit programs including coordination of annual plan renewals, changes, staff communication, and record management for billing and reconciliations. Manage relationships with brokers and vendors and facilitate their direct service to staff. Assist in the evaluation and selection of plans
  • Respond to employee questions and concerns regarding benefits and other aspects of their employment
  • Process, maintain and manage reporting of HR-related data and documents including HRIS database, personnel records, HR department work files, organization charts, guides and standard operating procedures manual
  • Coordinate recruitment services between external vendor and hiring managers. Administer background checks and other pre-employment processes. Coordinate new employee onboarding
  • Manage employee relations for staff working in the Chicago office (currently remote) and remote locations
  • Manage processes for leaves of absence and consideration of accommodation requests
  • Facilitate employee training and development programs
  • Maintain current knowledge of trends, best practices and new technologies in human resources, employee engagement and talent management
  • Maintain current knowledge of compliance with federal, state and local employment laws and regulations. Review policies and practices to recommend updates which maintain compliance
  • Serve on team that plans and delivers employee social events
  • Assist in development of and adherence to the annual budget


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, related field or equivalent experience; SHRM certification preferred
  • 7+ years of HR generalist experience including benefits and payroll administration, employee relations and training program delivery experience
  • Non-profit and sole HR resource experience preferred
  • Experience managing data in an HRIS system including experience in HR data, benefits, pay and performance management modules
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to effectively communicate to staff and managers, solicit feedback and encourage buy-in
  • Proven record of resolving HR solutions independently and confidently
  • Exceptional organization skills and analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal employment laws and regulations
