Chief Executive Officer

The Appraisal Institute (AI) is seeking a Chief Executive Officer. Based in Chicago, Illinois, the Appraisal Institute is the world’s leading organization of professional real estate appraisers. The position will report to the Board of Directors and Executive Committee. The CEO is responsible for supervising and managing strategic development of the Appraisal Institute.

The CEO will work with the President, Executive Committee and Board of Directors to develop, update as required, and implement the Mission and Vision Statement for the AI and the goals identified in the Strategic Plan. The CEO will identify and evaluate trends and events that will affect the AI membership and will be responsible for developing proposals to address these issues.

The CEO position will be responsible for management of the AI staff in both the Chicago headquarters and the Washington, D.C. office. With a budget of over $20M and a staff of 90, the CEO will provide leadership to the staff, while controlling all phases of the operation in the most cost-effective and efficient manner possible. The CEO will provide leadership in the staff’s support of the Board and its responsibilities.

The CEO position is very visible both internally and externally, involving frequent communication with the Board, Committees and their officers, Chapters’ leadership, general membership and related organizations, where appropriate.

The CEO will be responsible for increasing AI’s international brand and image, working closely with the Board and AI leadership to effect this goal.

The CEO will be responsible for developing staff and staff leadership in a manner that ensures smooth succession processes.

Marketing Specialist

Marketing lead on integrated marketing activities for the education department, the largest revenue generator among the product and services of AI.  Included in portfolio will be advertising, collateral, web pages, paid search, digital asset management and direct mail.

Knowledge: Basic Marketing Machine, Tools, Equipment (Office), Software: General office equipment; Word, Excel, Access, Outlook and Powerpoint.

Required Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years marketing or digital marketing experience.

 Manage professional practice cases to ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, policies and procedures.


  • Ability to analyze complex situations and apply regulations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and take responsibility for performing duties.
  • Temperament to effectively interact and communicate with Al Professionals, staff, attorneys, outside counsels and general public on confidential and sensitive matters.
  • Good organizational skills to handle multiple assignments with established priorities to meet goals of department.
  • Ability to take initiative in problem solving.
  • Understanding of legal risks and sensitivity to potential legal liability inherent in all actions in peer review proceedings.
  • Understanding of associations


Bachelor’s Degree in a major that requires development of analytical and communication skills

Paralegal/Lawyer's Assistant Designation or Certification (or equivalent)
