CHICAGO (Nov. 8, 2010) – Alexander G. Hesterberg, MAI, received the Lifetime Achievement Award and Roy Caves received the Outstanding Service Award during the Appraisal Institute’s annual meeting Wednesday in Miami Beach, Fla.

The Appraisal Institute is the nation’s largest professional association of real estate appraisers, with 25,000 members in 60 countries around the world.
“His passion and strong views have made him a great leader and a great mentor,” Appraisal Institute President Leslie Sellers, MAI, SRA, said of Hesterberg, who lives in Garden City, N.Y.
Awarded this year for the first time, the Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to an Appraisal Institute member who demonstrates high ethical standards; has volunteered several years of service and has contributed to the Appraisal Institute on the chapter, regional, national and/or international level; has served his or her community; and has contributed to the appraisal profession for at least 20 years.
Hesterberg earned his MAI designation in 1984 and since has been a member of the Appraisal Institute’s International Relations Committee, Government Relations Committee, Long Range Planning Committee and Client Advisory Board and also served on several project teams on the national level. He was instrumental in the integration of the two New York chapters at the time of the merger of the Appraisal Institute, and he was elected chapter president in 1998. Also within his chapter, he helped put together an annual educational seminar for members and guests of the Appraisal Institute, became a chapter Board of Directors member and remains active in the Metropolitan New York chapter. He is a managing director at Deutsche Bank.

Caves, of Madison, Miss., is executive director of the Mississippi Chapter. “Roy has demonstrated that he truly cares about our members and is willing to go the extra mile to make sure they are taken care of in times of need,” Sellers said.
The Outstanding Service Award is presented annually to an individual who has contributed ideas, service hours and dedication to ensure a specific program or effort is implemented at the chapter, region, national or international level. The individual must be instrumental in the success of the program or effort, which also must be far enough along to measure and provide proof of success. Additionally, the program or effort must be beneficial to chapters, regions, national, international, members or the profession.
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Caves contacted appraisers within the region, checked on their needs and facilitated assistance. Ultimately, his work paved the way for the creation of the AI Relief Foundation in 2006, whose board he has served on since then.
Sellers also recognized three members with the President’s Award, which is given at the president’s discretion to someone who is committed to the organization, currently engaged in its activities, is an effective spokesperson, a representative at all times, and who is in touch with both the needs of other members and the changes that the organization must help its members to meet.

President’s Award recipients were Terry Dunkin, MAI, SRA, SRPA; M. Ralph Griffin Jr., MAI; and Stephen D. Roach, MAI.
Dunkin was the Appraisal Institute’s president in 2007 and on the Board of Directors for eight years. Over the past nearly 20 years, he has served on the Audit, Bylaws, Finance, General Appraisal Board Admissions, General Appraiser Council, International, Leadership Development and Advisory Council, Nominating and Strategic Planning committees.
Griffin has been on the AI Board of Directors for nearly a decade and has served in various leadership positions for the past 15 years. He continues to serve on the Strategic Planning Committee and has served on the Nominating, Executive, Communications and Chapter Services committees.
Roach has served in a variety of leadership capacities for more than a dozen years and has served on the Education, Educational Programs, International Relations and Qualifying Education committees and the Young Advisory Council.
