Appraisal Institute Honors 20 National Award Winners

J. Scott Robinson, MAI, SRA, AI-GRS, AI-RRS, of Salisbury, North Carolina (posthumously); Arlen C. Mills, MAI, SRA, SRPA, of Sonoma, California; Terrell R. Oetzel, MAI, of East Lansing, Michigan; and Jim Amorin, MAI, SRA, AI-GRS, of Chicago, were honored Tuesday with the Appraisal Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award during the Appraisal Institute Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida.

The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to an Appraisal Institute professional who demonstrates high ethical standards; has volunteered several years of service and has contributed to the Appraisal Institute on the international, national, region and/or chapter level; has served his or her community; and has contributed to the appraisal profession for at least 20 years. The Lifetime Achievement Award was renamed in honor of the late Scott Robinson, who served as AI’s 2016 president, and was a leader in our organization, and the valuation profession worldwide, for decades before his tragic passing in January.

Four individuals also were announced as winners of the annual President’s Award from the Appraisal Institute, the nation’s largest professional association of real estate appraisers with nearly 17,000 professionals in almost 50 countries. Additionally, four individuals were honored by the Appraisal Institute Education and Relief Foundation, the Appraisal Institute’s charitable organization that offers education scholarships and disaster assistance, and four individuals were recognized by The Appraisal Journal, the Appraisal Institute’s quarterly academic and technical journal.

This year’s President’s Award recipients were Eric P. Haims, MAI, AI-GRS, of Clinton Corners New York; Shelly H. Tanaka, MAI, AI-GRS, of Honolulu; Sherry Engleberg, of Parker, Colorado; and Beata E. Swacha, of Chicago. The President’s Award is presented to an Appraisal Institute professional who is committed to the organization; currently engaged in its activities; an effective spokesperson; a representative at all times; and in touch with both the needs of other AI professionals and the changes that the organization must help its professionals to meet.

The Appraisal Institute Education and Relief Foundation honored the following individuals: Bonnie D. Roerig, MAI, AI-GRS, of Denver (James H. Pritchett Award); Larry T. Wright, MAI, SRA, AI-GRS, of Houston (Y.T. and Louise Lee Lum Award); Peter T. Christensen, Esq., of Santa Barbara, California (George L. Schmutz Award); and Stephanie Coleman, MAI, SRA, AI-GRS, AI-RRS, of Chicago (Dr. William N. Kinnard Jr. Award).

This year’s SPOTLIGHT Award recipient is Sara W. Stephens, MAI, AI-GRS, of Little Rock, Arkansas. The Women’s Initiative SPOTLIGHT Award was established in 2020 to recognize an AI professional who has made an important contribution to fostering the growth of women in the valuation profession. All AI professionals are eligible for the Women’s Initiative SPOTLIGHT Award.

This year’s Outstanding Service Award recipient is Ryan L. Zink, MAI, of Tampa, Florida. The Outstanding Service Award is presented to an AI professional who has contributed ideas, service hours and dedication to ensure a specific program or effort is implemented at either the chapter, region, national and/or international level(s). This AI professional must be instrumental to the success of the program or effort, which also must be far enough along to measure and provide proof of success.

The Appraisal Journal announced awards to Kimberly K. Merriman, Ph.D., of Ambler, Pennsylvania, and Leonard J. Patcella, MAI, of Springhouse, Pennsylvania (Richard U. Ratcliff Award); David C. Lennhoff, MAI, SRA, AI-GRS, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, and Richard L. Parli, MAI, of Fairfax, Virginia (Swango Award); and Bruce K. Cole, Ph.D., of Forest Acres, South Carolina, and David Hueber, Ph.D., of Ponte Vedra, Florida (Armstrong/Kahn Award).
