Appraisal Institute Officers Outline 2018 Plans: Valuation Magazine

CHICAGO (Jan. 4, 2018) – The Appraisal Institute's 2018 elected officers discuss the opportunities and challenges facing the real estate valuation profession – and their plans to address these issues – in a wide-ranging article published in Valuation magazine’s fourth quarter 2017 issue.
Valuation magazine is a quarterly publication of the Appraisal Institute, the nation’s largest professional association of real estate appraisers.
In the magazine’s cover story, “Tackling the Tough Topics,” 2018 President James L. Murrett, MAI, SRA, and the Appraisal Institute’s other elected national officers – President-Elect Stephen S. Wagner, MAI, SRA, AI-GRS; Vice President Jefferson L. Sherman, MAI, AI-GRS; and Immediate Past President and Acting CEO Jim Amorin, MAI, SRA, AI-GRS – discuss their concerns about the Federal Housing Finance Agency allowing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to use appraisal alternatives in new and higher-risk situations, overregulation of the profession and appraiser shortages, and the officers’ ongoing efforts to address these issues on behalf of AI professionals.

Also in this issue:
“Independent Minded” explores the problem of misclassifying workers as independent contractors — an issue that’s attracted government attention as agencies grapple with regulating so-called gig economy companies. The problem should grab the attention of valuation firms as well. While the liability risk for misclassification has been relatively low, the consequences for some firms have been very high.
“Cracking the Code” examines Congress’ $1.5 trillion tax reform plan — the most sweeping overhaul of the federal tax code in three decades. Reaction from the real estate community has been mixed, but there are several important items for appraisers and valuation firms to consider.
