    Course Objectives

    Examine the types of additional requests commonly received by appraisers from their Lender/Clients

    Discuss the background and reasoning behind the Lender/Clients requests to gain a better understanding why a client would be motivated to ask for, and underwrite for, those new assignment elements

    Review common elements of expanded scope of work and consider alternative strategies for addressing the client concerns

    Consider the importance of “due diligence” in the development of an appraisal in today’s lending environment

    Present alternative tactics that may be employed to better explain and support the appraiser’s analysis and conclusions in the appraisal report

    Promote awareness of the importance of appraisals in society and the need for independent, impartial & objective appraisals that build confidence and public trust.

    Lissa E. Brutus is the Valuations Manager at WSFS Bank in Wilmington, Delaware, with over 10 years of experience. At WSFS Bank, she oversees the engagement, tracking, and review of valuations for properties with exposure exceeding $500k, conducts market research, and ensures compliance with state and federal guidelines. Prior to this role, she worked as a Certified General Real Estate Appraiser at Higgins & Welch Real Estate and Integra Realty Resources. Her career began at R.D. Geronimo Ltd. on Long Island, NY as a Research Analyst and an Appraiser Assistant, where she valued various property types, handling projects up to $700MM appraising diverse real estate asset types for purposes such as lending, acquisition, and litigation. Lissa holds a Bachelor of Science degree from SUNY Farmingdale State College and is licensed as a State Certified General Appraiser in Delaware.

    In addition to her professional work, Lissa is active in several organizations and is a member of 2024 LDAC cohort. She serves as Chair of True Access Capital Women’s Business Center Advisory Board, Board Member for Housing Helpers Inc. and Freire Wilmington Charter School, and is the Treasurer of the Appraisal Institute’s Delaware Chapter. She is also involved with the CREW Greater Philadelphia Chapter as Scholarship Chair. Lissa is a frequent speaker at industry events, including recent engagements at the Wealth & Wisdom conference and HOND’s Annual Fair Housing Conference.


    Doug Cesky With over 24 years of experience in the appraisal industry, Doug currently serves as a Review Appraiser at Horizon Farm Credit. In this role, he is responsible for ordering and reviewing real estate and chattel appraisals, ensuring compliance with federal appraisal and Farm Credit Administration regulations, appraisal standards, USPAP standards, and Farm Credit policies. Doug’s work encompasses a wide range of property types, including residential, land, farm, and chattel properties, each with varying degrees of complexity. Prior to joining Horizon Farm Credit in 2015, Doug served as President and Residential Appraiser at DEC Appraisal Services, LLC, where he specialized in waterfront, complex residential, and HUD foreclosure properties. He holds a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Towson State University and has been a Certified Residential Appraiser in Maryland since 1999. Doug is also a member of the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers. Throughout his career, Doug has demonstrated a commitment to excellence and a deep understanding of the appraisal industry, making him aninvaluable asset to Horizon Farm Credit.


    Alexander D. Knight, MAI, AI-GRS, is a Senior Commercial Appraiser with M&T Bank, with extensive experience reviewing appraisals of properties throughout the East Coast and across the country. That experience spans a wide variety of property types, including apartment, hospitality, industrial, institutional, mixed use, multifamily, nursing care, office, recreational, residential, resource, retail, and a myriad of special use properties, from data centers to dry docks. He began as an appraiser trainee directly inside Wilmington Trust in 2004, appraising and eventually reviewing appraisals on properties in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. With the merger of Wilmington Trust with M&T Bank, his work moved to exclusively appraisal review assignments. Outside of M&T Bank, Alex has been active with the Delaware Chapter of the Appraisal Institute, holding multiple executive and committee positions, with the national Appraisal Institute on several panels and committees, and with three years’ attendance at the Leadership Development and Advisory Council. His commitment to the profession extends to the state regulatory level, where he was appointed as a Professional Member of the Delaware Council on Real Estate Appraisers. Alex received his master’s degree in economics from the University of Iowa, and his bachelor’s degree in economics and sociology from the University of Northern Iowa.
