Summary:
The PAREA Mentor guides, supports, and evaluates participants through the Appraisal Institute’s Practical Applications of Real Estate Appraisal (PAREA) program. This role plays a vital part in developing the next generation of appraisers by providing individualized feedback, fostering critical thinking, and modeling the professional and ethical standards of the Appraisal Institute.
The Mentor serves as both instructor and advisor, helping participants apply theoretical knowledge to simulated real-world appraisal assignments. Mentors collaborate closely with the PAREA Coordinator and other program stakeholders to ensure participants receive consistent, high-quality learning experiences throughout the 10 required appraisal simulations. This is a part-time position requiring 25 hours per week.
Duties And Rresponsibilities:
Mentorship & Participant Support
- Guide, coach, and advise participants through all phases of the AI PAREA experience
- Provide constructive, insightful, and timely feedback on appraisal assignments to help participants develop professional competence and confidence
- Conduct regular check-ins with participants through both asynchronous (email, discussion boards) and synchronous (Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or similar platforms) communication
- Encourage independent problem-solving while reinforcing core appraisal principles and ethical practices
Collaboration & Program Support
- Partner with the PAREA Coordinator and other program stakeholders to ensure alignment, consistency, and participant progress
- Participate in ongoing mentor meetings, calibration sessions, and program updates to maintain quality and standardization across the mentoring experience
- Share observations and recommendations to improve program design, curriculum delivery, and participant engagement
Professional Conduct & Continuous Improvement
- Complete required AI PAREA Mentor Orientation and maintain familiarity with current PAREA standards, educational tools, and evaluation processes
- Represent the Appraisal Institute with professionalism
Qualifications:
- Designated Appraisal Institute professional (SRA or MAI) in good standing, compliant with continuing education requirements, and not subject to disciplinary action or investigation within the last three years
- State-certified appraiser in good standing for at least three years, with no disciplinary action in that period affecting the ability to practice or supervise appraisals; maintain good standing regarding state-certified license during employment.
- Minimum of five years of residential appraisal experience (including within the past 12–24 months) covering a range of property types (single-unit, 2–4 unit, condominium, vacant land) and intended uses (e.g., conventional, FHA)
- Strong understanding of residential real estate appraisal theory, methods, and standards
- Proficiency with digital appraisal tools and technology platforms, including MLS, GIS, sketching/measuring software, and forms software
- Proficient with online learning and communication tools (Canvas, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Excel)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a collaborative, mentoring-oriented approach
