STATEMENT FROM THE APPRAISAL INSTITUTE

The following statement may be attributed to the Appraisal Institutes Bill Garber, Director, Government and External Relations. It is in response to todays comment by Lawrence Yun, National Association of Realtors chief economist, that the increase in existing home sales in May "is less than expected because poor appraisals are stalling transactions. Some contracts are falling through from faulty valuations that keep buyers from getting a loan."

Appraisal Institute Offering Customized Appraisal Education for Lenders

To assist banks and mortgage lenders with appraisal training, the Appraisal Institute has created a specialized, customizable educational program titled Commercial Appraisal Engagement and Review for Bankers. Participants of the program will learn how real estate appraisals fit into the regulatory scheme for financial institutions. Appraisal Institute Urges Congress to Pass Pending Mortgage Reform Bill

The Appraisal Institute, the nation’s largest organization of professional real estate appraisers, is urging Congressional representatives to pass H.R. 1728, the Mortgage Reform and Anti-Predatory Lending Act of 2009, a bill that would eliminate a number of regulatory loopholes in the mortgage lending system and strengthen the appraisal regulatory structure. Appraisal Institute Welcomes 4,000 New Members

The Appraisal Institute is pleased to announce that in 2008 the organization welcomed more new members than in any year since the former American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers and the Society of Real Estate Appraisers merged to form the Appraisal Institute in 1991. The Appraisal Institute Board of Directors yesterday voted not to pursue affiliation with the National Association of Realtors (NAR). The vote, which occurred during the Board’s fall meeting in San Antonio, Texas, follows year-long meetings between the organizations during which possible terms and conditions were discussed.
