Eligibility to enter a Candidate for Designation program

Four designation paths available. Which designation path is right for you?

The MAI Designation is sought by General Candidates for Designation who provide a wide range of services on all types of real property related to providing, opinions of value, evaluations, review, consulting and advice on investment decisions, among other things. Property types may include commercial, industrial, agricultural, residential, and vacant land.

Individuals looking to enter the General Candidate for Designation program are required to be Certified General Real Property Appraisers (or equivalent).

The SRA Designation is sought by Residential Candidates for Designation who provide a wide range of services for residential properties related to, providing opinions of value, evaluations, reviews, consulting, and advice regarding investment decisions, among other things.

Individuals looking to enter the Residential Candidate for Designation program are required to be Certified Real Property Appraisers (or equivalent).

The AI-GRS Designation is sought by General Review Candidates for Designation who provide reviews of appraisals of a wide range of property types, including commercial, industrial, agricultural, residential, and vacant land. Property types may include commercial, industrial, agricultural, residential, and vacant land.

Individuals looking to enter the General Review Candidate for Designation program are required to be Certified General Real Property Appraisers (or equivalent).

The AI-RRS Designation is sought by Residential Review Candidates for Designation who provide reviews of residential appraisals.

Individuals looking to enter the Residential Review Candidate for Designation program are required to be Certified Real Property Appraisers (or equivalent).

Readmission: Individuals interested in readmission, please refer to the Candidate Policy Manual. Standards and Ethics education may be required prior to readmission along with lengths of time in between re-entering Candidate programs.

Candidate Program Equivalencies

Are you a State Certified Assessor, have a credential or designation from another organization, hold an appraisal license from a country outside the United States, graduate from an Appraisal Institute approved master’s degree program, or graduate from an approved undergraduate or graduate degree program approved by the Appraisal Institute or one you would like to have evaluated?

Candidate for Designation Annual Fees

Fees are $460 per year and are prorated if you join between February and October. Individuals joining after November 1st are charged the full fees for the upcoming year. Fees are subject to change annually.
